Further More on Key Wrapping

چکیده
At SAC 2009, Gennaro and Halevi showed that a key wrapping scheme using a universal hash function and ECB mode (a HtECB scheme) is broken, and the security of a scheme based on a universal hash function and CBC mode (a HtCBC scheme) has been left as an open problem. In this paper, we first generalize classical notions of universal and uniform hash functions, and propose two new notions, where we consider the composition of the keyed hash function. We then prove that the HtECB scheme is a secure key wrapping scheme if a universal hash function satisfies uniformity and our notions. We further generalize the notions, and propose two more new notions for a keyed hash function. We present a partial answer to the open problem by showing that the HtCBC scheme using a universal hash function that also satisfies uniformity and the new notions is a secure key wrapping scheme. We then point out that a monic polynomial hash function satisfies all the new notions. Therefore, by combining the monic polynomial hash function with ECB mode and CBC mode, we obtain secure and efficient key wrapping schemes.

One-Pass HMQV and Asymmetric Key-Wrapping
Consider the task of asymmetric key-wrapping, where a key-management server encrypts a cryptographic key under the public key of a client. When used in storage and access-control systems, it is often the case that the server has no knowledge about the client (beyond its public key) and no means of coordinating with it. For example, a wrapped key used to encrypt a backup tape may be needed many ...
متن کاملDNA wrapping is required for DNA damage recognition in the Escherichia coli DNA nucleotide excision repair pathway.
Localized DNA melting may provide a general strategy for recognition of the wide array of chemically and structurally diverse DNA lesions repaired by the nucleotide excision repair (NER) pathway. However, it is not clear what causes such DNA melting and how it is driven. Here, we show a DNA wrapping-melting model supported by results from dynamic monitoring of the key DNA-protein and protein-pr...
متن کاملExpression of Concern: Protein Under-Wrapping Causes Dosage Sensitivity and Decreases Gene Duplicability
A fundamental issue in molecular evolution is how to identify the evolutionary forces that determine the fate of duplicated genes. The dosage balance hypothesis has been invoked to explain gene duplication patterns at the genomic level under the premise that a dosage imbalance among protein-complex subunits or interacting partners is often deleterious. Here we examine this hypothesis by investi...
متن کاملKey Wrapping with a Fixed Permutation
We present an efficient key wrapping scheme that uses a single public permutation as the basic element. As the scheme does not rely on block ciphers, it can be used on a resource-constrained device where such a permutation comes from an implemented hash function, regular (SHA-3/Keccak) or lightweight one (Quark, Photon). The scheme is capable of wrapping keys up to 1400 bits long and processing...
متن کاملThe role of membrane curvature for the wrapping of nanoparticles.
Cellular internalization of nanoparticles requires the full wrapping of the nanoparticles by the cell membrane. This wrapping process can occur spontaneously if the adhesive interactions between the nanoparticles and the membranes are sufficiently strong to compensate for the cost of membrane bending. In this article, we show that the membrane curvature prior to wrapping plays a key role for th...
